Proverbs 15:4
Gentle words are a tree of life, a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
Proverbs 18:14
The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me...until I got home and in the privacy of my room cried like a baby. We often let loose our tongues doing damage we may never understand or even see. There are several topics or words that I have to tread softly around due to the fact that in the past I have hurt April deeply with snide comments, anger or sarcasm. Without caring how my actions and words were affecting April I was crushing her spirit. Husbands and Fathers have an immense amount of power and influence over our wives and daughters. As Jesus began to restore our relationship I understood ever more clearly how low I had driven April's esteem. To this day my efforts are still needed to encourage and lift April up in the ways I had once torn her down. It leaves me asking; are my words edifying and encouraging, or am I tearing down what God wants to use for good?
Jesus I thank and praise you for restoring relationships. Grow our hearts to love one another enough to use our voices to bring You glory, to water the tree of life and not to quench the Holy Spirit in those around us.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
